He began his career by assisting director S. Shankar on the films Enthiran (2010) and Nanban (2012) at the young age of 19 years.
Atlee is a die-hard fan of the South superstar, Rajinikanth.
He launched his own production house called A for Apple Production in 2017.
In spite of his phenomenal success, Atlee has been accused of plagiarizing the works of past successful films. For instance, his debut film Raja Rani‘s story was compared to that of Mani Ratnam‘s Mouna Ragam (1986). His second film Theri (2016) bore a close resemblance to Chatriyan (1990) starring Vijayakanth. Lastly, Mersal (2017) was undeniably similar to the story of the Rajinikanth-starrer Moondru Mugam (1982).
